Week 1- Setting up virtual and work environments and ARC Festival

19 Jun 2026 - Kofi Quarshie - Linux, Git, Python, Learning, introduction

Overiew

This project involves the development of various AI models and the use of various datatsets to improve the READY project, which is an open source project developed by UCL-ARC to detect Nystagmus, which is an eye disease causing involuntary and repetitive movement of the eye. The use of fedearted Learing has been incorporated to proext patient’s eye data, which is being used to train the ML models.

Highlights

  • I have set up VS code on the work laptop and installed the necessary extensions needed for the project. This mainly includes installing git, uv, the virtual environment, and running some commands that is vital to make the code run, derived fromm Github.
  • I have read some papers that incorporate the use of UNET to detect AMD, another eye disease, which was developed by some researches as well. Also read papers given to me by my supervisors whicgh providees an pverview oh what the datasets are and how they will be used in the project
  • I attended the ARC festival which was really insightful and informative. Met various researchers and what they have been researching and working on from their posters, various speakers and loads of networking opportunities where I met people pursuing their PHDs, some people from last year’s in2research with ARC and other ARC members. Setbacks

  • The project was mainly designed to accomodate Linux/Mac OS so there were some commands I had to use alternatives on the terminal.
  • Some test cases failed mainly because the repo uses backslash while windows or git bash uses forward slash which was slightly complicated.
  • Could not install Cuda because it was meant to be for Ubuntu or linux OS. Tried installing Ubuntu and led git bash and some applications on the computer crashing. Will follow this up on my first catch up meeting next Monday.

Next Week’s Plan

  • Meet up with my supervisors to discuss my setback from earlier and derive a solution
  • Continue the project, complete my tasks and meet the deadlines needed for each
